Video: First robust and feasible gesture control using Time-of-Flight technology

The innovation proposed here is a touchless, hand-gesture-based human-machine-interaction system using Time-of-Flight technology from PMDTechnologies GmbH. At a resolution of 200x200 pixels a depth map as well as a gray value image of the observed scene is available from PMD sensors at real-time frame-rates. As a PMD pixel can be implemented using standard CMOS technology, PMD sensors provide a low-cost possibility to acquire depth maps. With the novel CamBoard from PMDTec a USB-powered webcam-size PMD-sensor is nowadays available.
The advantage of the innovative advanced object analysis, which verifies whether the segmented hand really is an interacting hand, provides a new dimension of robustness: if and only if the gesture is performed in compliance with the requirements for an interacting hand.
