Video: How Many Pixels? How Many Photons?
Chris Softley - Photonfocus AG Content: The consumer market for small, cheap CMOS imagers is huge. You probably have one in your pocket right now. So why aren’t CMOS imagers for machine vision small and cheap? The talk will answer this question by explaining fundamental differences in the requirements placed on consumer and machine vision products. The key performance parameters relevant to a machine vision sensor / camera will be explained and the question of the smallest feature that can be “seen” in an image will be examined, to show how parameters like pixel size and number, full well capacity and signal to noise ratio influence results in a vision system. The theory will then be applied to the practical example of solar cell inspection, where it is necessary to examine very fine structures. Commercial aspects will be briefly discussed to show how these affect small as well as cheap. The talk concludes with a ...

Video: CMOS Image Sensors and Cameras Optimized for Machine Vision – Why Bother?
Chris Softley - Photonfocus AG 12:30 - 13:00 Uhr Content: Cameras are everywhere - you probably have one in your pocket right now. Adoption of CMOS imagers in consumer products is massive, with volume growing despite the downturn, and price/performance keeps improving. This begs the question: does machine vision still need its own sensors and cameras? The talk will answer this question by explaining the key performance parameters and functionality needed in mahine vision, before comparing a state-of-the-art machine vision product with a standard product from both technical and commercial viewpoints.
